In 2020, our lifestyles were suddenly transformed to become dependent on our computers and the online space. We turned to our screens for work, for education, for social interaction, for entertainment.
Life was -and still is in 2021- lived online.
To adapt to this change, the majority of the art consumed today all exist in some form of digital format, whether it be through photos posted on social media, through publishing on online streaming services, through a virtual recreation.
Thus, the artist’s creative constraint of the 2020’s emerges: to find expression through the complex successions of 0s and 1s.
In this 14th chapter, 美 attempts to address the extent of the digital through the format of a website-zine.
How does digitalization affects presentation and consumption of art? How have digital mediums opened new ways of creating art? How has the internet shifted the shape of artist communities?
Coded from scratch by all of our members, this zine is a reflection of the developing artificial symbiosis between art and the digital.
In this edition of our zine, we have received the help from these artists: Alice Longyu Gao (Hyperpop musican based in LA), Shejtano (graphic artist from Munich), Prof. John Patrick Pazdziora (Project Assistant Professor at The University of Tokyo).
Thank you to all these creators who have helped us complete this zine.
