It’s a January afternoon (morning in Tokyo) when Gao joined us for an interview as part of our 14th chapter ✧*:･ﾟ✧ ★,｡･:*:･ﾟ‧͙⁺˚*･༓☾ on Art + the Digital. A do-it-all-myself approach to music combined with socially charged maximalist hyperpop +..｡*ﾟ+ makes Gao a punk in pop. Listening to her talk, a glimpse of Nana’s protagonist Nana was felt through her determination and perseverance as she opened up to us about what it means to be an independent artist in the digital realm and beyond. • .・。.・ Born and raised in China, Gao studied in Japan and became a college-graduate • .・。.・゜✭・.・✫・゜・。. on the east coast. Having grown in a conservative and sheltered environment until going to college, her need for rebellion ˚*•̩̩͙✩•̩̩͙*˚＊·̩̩̥͙ translates into her music by pushing the structural and formulaic boundaries of pop music. Projects like Harajuku Housewives tackling women’s submission to male power come +..｡*ﾟ+.・。.・゜ directly from what she had observed in the dynamic between her parents and the +..｡*ﾟ+ unrealistic expectations she had felt as an East Asian woman. “This ideal of the ･ﾟ:* ･ﾟ:* .・。.・゜ submissive wife is really present [for Asian women], and it's also a part of my culture, a ＊*•̩̩͙✩•̩̩͙* ・゜・。. part of me.” Furthermore, being in the US adds on another layer of expectations. “In America, ・゜・。. +..｡*ﾟ+ ☽༓･*˚⁺‧͙ so many people assume that Chinese are loud, Japanese are stressful, and Japanese women are ･ﾟ:* ・゜・。. ＊*•̩̩͙✩•̩̩͙* submissive […] So many people make assumptions. Like if I’m Asian, I must be an Otaku and like Anime ・゜・。. ･ﾟ:* ✧･ﾟ: *✧･ﾟ:*.・。.・゜ or that I’m really into Lolita Style when I just feature different styles.” Yet Gao goes against changing her ✧･ﾟ: *✧･ﾟ:*.・。.・・゜・。. presentation to meet or subvert these expectations. Instead, she chooses to challenge them straight on, both ･ﾟ:* ･ﾟ:* visually and sonically, by finding power in them. Her awareness of her unique cultural background gives her opportunities that no other artists can explore. She lists her trilingualism as one of those strengths: “In a song, there are just parts where Japanese sounds better and where English sounds better 🤷”. To the people who view her pride in her culture negatively, Gao retorted, “I want to ask them ‘Do you even speak more than one language? Do you speak anything else other than English? You are so lame I don’t want to talk to you’”. And thus emerges a theme in her music: sincerity -- a sincerity in who she is and a sincerity in what she feels. “Music makes me happy, it makes other people happy, ‧͙⁺˚*･༓☾ and I can also make others happy by making music.” • .｡*ﾟ+.*.｡　　　ﾟ+..｡*ﾟ+ In this sincerity, she is not afraid to be vulnerable. Struggling with body dysmorphia and an eating disorder, Gao finds comfort in her digitized art medium. What started as a means to save money when shooting her clips, her pixelated self on the computer eventually gave her a .｡.:*☆.｡.:* form of relief from her physical self: ＊*•̩̩͙✩•̩̩͙*˚　　˚*•̩̩͙✩•̩̩͙*˚＊ “I had an anxiety towards the camera,” ・゜-: ✧ :-　　-: ✧ :-゜・・゜-: ✧ :-　　-: ✧ :-゜・ she explained, “but the computer images ・゜-: ✧ :-　　-: ✧ :-゜・ of me just need to…sort of … look like me.” Her online persona with bold makeup styles and colorful outfits are not only vectors to her self-expression, but they also become a way to reaffirm herself despite her insecurities. “Sometimes I think ‘OMG I suck’ when working with all these legends in the field. But with fashionable outfits — it is easier to fake it.”

Gao’s work reflects her authentic self and her genuine enthusiasm for creativity.
Neither her music nor her identity is compromised for the sake of the western palette or her conservative roots.
“Music is something that comes at you so hard, I don’t know what it is, but…music always comes down to the artist.”
With each song, she stands unapologetically proud to the world, as if to say,
“I am Alice Longyu Gao.
I deserve to be respected for who I am, and I deserve to be heard”.
For us, early-twenty-year-olds still waiting to fill
our adulthood mold drop by drop with experience,
her presence and attitude resonated in us.
Just like Nana, Gao had a kind of magic that only she could make happen.
But for her, the spotlight came from the pixels at maximum brightness,
and on the other side of the screen, we were dumbfounded as much as Hachi was.
